North Shore gardeners ready to swap out their summer annuals can build a cool-season container to take home at the Chicago Botanic Garden on Thursday, Sept. 10.

The Autumn Container Workshop runs three one-hour sessions that day: 10–11 a.m., 1–2 p.m. and 6–7 p.m. Each participant will plant a 14-inch biodegradable container with a mix chosen for full-sun or partial-shade conditions. Options include annuals, perennials, herbs, decorative foliage, cool-season vegetables, ornamental grasses and gourds.

The morning session is led by Chester Jankowski, senior horticulturist at the Garden. Lindsey Muscavitch, a Garden horticulturist, leads the afternoon session. The instructor for the evening session has not been announced.

Participants take their finished container home and can display it as-is or drop it into a decorative pot or urn. The Garden advises dressing for the weather; the class moves indoors if conditions require it. Participants may bring gloves.

The workshop costs $89 for Garden members and $112 for non-members. All sessions meet in Classroom 4 of the Learning Center at 1000 Lake Cook Road in Glencoe.
