On the issues
The following positions are based on statements Britton has made about his record. Each is attributed to the candidate.
Tobacco regulation: Britton said his first piece of legislation as commissioner, co-sponsored with Larry Suffredin, was the Tobacco 21 ordinance. The measure passed unanimously and bars the sale of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vaping products, to anyone under 21 in unincorporated areas and non-home-rule municipalities in Cook County.
Voting access and language equity: Britton said he sponsored the Voting Opportunity and Translation Equity ordinance in October 2019. The ordinance requires the county clerk to offer fully translated ballots in Korean, Tagalog, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Gujarati and Urdu.
Tenant protections: Britton said he was a main sponsor of the Cook County Residential Tenant Landlord Ordinance, which passed unanimously. The legislation offers renters in unincorporated Cook County protections similar to those available to renters in Chicago, according to the candidate.
Property tax assessment transparency: Britton said he supported Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi's legislation urging data modernization for property tax assessments. He said passage of SB1379 and HB2217 would mean more certainty for the county's smaller taxing bodies. Britton said he hosted a listening session in Palatine with Kaegi and committed to making the assessment process more fair and transparent.
