If you've spent the summer watering, weeding and coaxing blooms out of your North Shore yard, the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe wants to make sure all that work pays off next spring.
The Garden is offering a Fall Garden Care workshop on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Classroom 6 of its Learning Center. Tim Johnson, the Garden's director of horticulture, will lead the two-hour session covering fall fertilizing, mulching, cutting back perennials, and protecting plants from wind and animals. Johnson will also share pointers on fall planting of woody plants and spring-flowering bulbs.
The class costs $39 for Garden members and $49 for nonmembers. Registration is open now at chicagobotanic.org.
It's a single session. No prerequisite required.
The Garden, a 385-acre nonprofit living museum at 1000 Lake Cook Road, operates as a public-private partnership with the Forest Preserves of Cook County. It announced the workshop on its official X account on Monday, Aug. 10, noting that proper fall care helps ensure healthy plants the following spring.
The workshop falls in the narrow window between summer's last heat and the first hard frost, a key stretch for fall prep. Registration closes after the event date, but the Garden advises signing up promptly.
