The Chicago Botanic Garden wants you to stay up past your bedtime.

On Saturday, August 8, the Garden in Glencoe is hosting its first Night Fliers Mothing Workshop, a 7:30-to-11 p.m. session that begins in a classroom and ends outdoors in the dark, where a special light rig will draw moths and other nocturnal creatures out of the Garden's 385 acres for close observation.

The workshop is a partnership with the Insect Asylum, a nonprofit vintage taxidermy and insect museum based in Chicago that houses more than 5,000 specimens in its hands-on showroom. The Insect Asylum also represents over 60 local independent artists and hosts music, poetry, and dance events alongside its exhibits.

Participants will learn to identify nighttime critters and get trained on community science apps that will be used in future research to help preserve local ecosystems. Illinois is home to roughly 1,700 species of moths, many of which depend on native plants for food and habitat and serve as critical nighttime pollinators. Tracking their presence helps scientists gauge ecosystem health.
