North Shore youth athletes, swimmers, and beachgoers face a week of extreme heat starting Monday, June 29, with forecasters warning that heat index values could top 110 degrees across the Chicago area through the July 4 holiday weekend.
The National Weather Service is forecasting highs of 92 degrees Monday, 94 Tuesday, 95 Wednesday, and 95 Thursday for the region. Combined with high humidity, those temperatures will push the heat index well into triple digits. NWS meteorologist Frank Pereira said overnight lows will offer little relief: "It's really not going to cool off much at night."
What's confirmed: beaches and holiday events
Gillson Park in Wilmette (swimming beach hours 10 a.m.–8 p.m.) and Winnetka's five lakefront beaches (9 a.m. to dusk) remain open through the heat. Wilmette Park District's Fun & Fireworks event at Gillson Park is scheduled for Friday, July 3, at 5 p.m.
Glencoe Beach will be closed all day Friday, July 3, to prepare for the Party in the Park fireworks show (5–10 p.m. at Lakefront Park, fireworks at approximately 9 p.m.). The beach reopens Saturday, July 4, for season pass holders and guests only, 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Glencoe's Fun Run starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at the train station, followed by the Village Parade at 1 p.m. downtown.
What to watch: youth sports and cancellations
Under IHSA heat policy, all outdoor training and competition must be canceled when Wet Bulb Globe Temperature reaches 90 degrees. That threshold could be approached at forecast conditions, though on-site WBGT readings are not yet available.
