A Ford Bronco crashed into Hometown Coffee & Juice in Glencoe on Tuesday, Sept. 22, injuring four people with shattered glass.

The crash happened around 10:28 a.m. at the cafe's location at 700 Vernon Ave., on the northwest corner of Park and Vernon avenues. A juvenile driver was trying to back out of a nearby parking space when the SUV accelerated forward instead, jumped the curb and broke through at least two large glass panes, The Record North Shore first reported. First responders found the Bronco partially inside the business.

No one was seriously hurt.

All four people suffered minor lacerations from broken glass, and two were taken to a local hospital for further treatment, Glencoe Public Safety Deputy Chief Andrew Perley told The Record. The vehicle did not directly strike anyone, he said.

Three of the four people hurt were outside the cafe at the time of the crash. One was inside. Owner Lou Rubin told The Record the Bronco hit the Park Avenue side of the building, opposite the front entrance. The Chicago Tribune reported the vehicle entered through the front entrance glass, citing the Glencoe Public Safety Department's news release.

The collision also damaged the brickwork around the storefront, according to The Record. A Glencoe Public Safety Department news release said the driver had accelerated forward, traveled over the curb and partially entered the business through a glass window.

Perley declined to release the driver's age or other details about the incident because the case involves a juvenile, the Tribune reported.

The roadway at the scene reopened to traffic by 10:40 a.m., roughly 12 minutes after the crash.

A Village of Glencoe building inspector cleared the structure for normal operation the same day. Rubin said Hometown Coffee closed for the rest of Tuesday but planned to reopen Wednesday.

"It's a miracle that no one was seriously injured … We're incredibly appreciative of all those who rushed to help," Rubin told The Record.

No charges or further investigation timeline had been announced as of Tuesday afternoon.
