A Glencoe man's killer will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Lake County Judge Patricia Fix sentenced Kevin N. Biron-Bomis, 54, of Gurnee to 46 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the first-degree murder of Brandon Biron-Bomis, 47, of Glencoe, his brother. The sentence, imposed Sept. 5, must be served in full under Illinois truth-in-sentencing guidelines.

Brandon Biron-Bomis's wife told the court her husband's killer was a "callous monster" and that the murder was "personal, intimate, and at an indescribable level of violence."

"For years, I watched this narcissist walk into this courtroom with a cane due to his 'back pain,' but he had no pain when he was sitting on my husband's chest and pummeling him to death," she said in her victim impact statement.

The killing happened around 2 a.m. on Dec. 25, 2022, at Kevin Biron-Bomis's home in the 1000 block of Boulevard View in Gurnee. The brothers had spent part of Christmas Day together at several bars in Waukegan, prosecutors said. Bar employees told Kevin Biron-Bomis his brother was acting up and needed to leave, Lake and McHenry County Scanner reported. Kevin Biron-Bomis, a regular at the bar, became embarrassed, according to prosecutors.

Back at the house, Kevin Biron-Bomis shook his brother's hand and said "it was not a big deal," then punched him, prosecutors said. Brandon fell, got back up, and Kevin punched him again before getting on top of him and beating him until he died.

Gurnee firefighter-paramedic Michael Smith, the first witness at trial, testified that Brandon Biron-Bomis was not breathing and had no heartbeat when paramedics arrived, the Chicago Tribune reported. He was pronounced dead at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

Kevin Biron-Bomis initially told police his brother swung first and claimed self-defense. Officers noted the defendant had no visible injuries. He later gave detectives a second account that contradicted his first, prosecutors said.

A jury convicted him of first-degree murder on June 25 after a four-day trial. Prosecutors called more than a dozen witnesses and played surveillance video from the Waukegan bar showing Kevin Biron-Bomis shoving the victim to the ground. The defense called three witnesses, including the defendant, whose trial testimony prosecutors said contradicted his earlier statements and the evidence.

Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart said after the June 25 verdict that without the investigation by Gurnee police, the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and the coroner's office, the jury might have believed the defendant's testimony. He had faced up to 60 years and will receive credit for 1,350 days served in the Lake County Jail awaiting trial.

Kevin Biron-Bomis is a registered violent offender. Prosecutors said he has a prior Lake County conviction for strangling a 7-year-old child and a felony conviction for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
