Mary Trieschmann is leading another walk through Winnetka's neighborhoods this Sunday, and the rest of the week is full of reasons to get out.
Trieschmann, who organizes the village's popular walking tour series, will guide the Village Green Neighborhood Walking Tour on Sunday, July 19, starting at 1:30 p.m. at Village Green Park, 525 Maple St. The tour follows her sold-out Cultural and Civic Icons walk last weekend, a 90-minute route past the Winnetka Community House, the "Home Alone" neighborhood, and the Congregational Church. Details on registration for the July 19 tour have not been posted; residents should check the Winnetka Historical Society or Patch event listings for updates.
Glenview Art League's 72nd Summer Art Fair
The Glenview Art League holds its 72nd Summer Art Fair on Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, at Attea Middle School, 2500 Chestnut Ave., Glenview. Doors open at 11 a.m. Saturday. The league calls it one of Illinois' longest-running art fairs. Sunday hours have not been confirmed.
Writers Theatre headlines two free events
Writers Theatre in Glencoe anchors the back half of the week with two free community gatherings.
On Monday, July 21, at 7 p.m., the theater hosts Show & Tell: Summer Nights at 325 Tudor Ct. The July theme is summer stories: jobs, loves, camps. Admission is free.
Then on Friday, July 24, Glencoe Al Fresco returns to the park next to Writers Theatre from 5 to 7 p.m. The evening features Blues Night with Big Dog Mercer, food trucks, and happy hour specials at the Writers Theatre Bar. The series is co-presented by Writers Theatre, the Village of Glencoe, and the Glencoe Public Library. Free admission.
History you can walk through
The Schmidt-Burnham Log House, Winnetka's oldest surviving structure, is open every Sunday through November 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. at 1140 Willow Rd. Built around 1837, the cabin originally stood on what is now the Indian Hill Club grounds, was moved to Tower Road in 1917, and relocated to Crow Island Woods in 2003. Trieschmann organizes the log house visits as well. Exhibits, artifacts, and a scavenger hunt are included.
The Winnetka Historical Society, led by President Carrie Hoza and curator Meagan McChesney, opened a 50-year-old time capsule at Village Hall this summer as part of the America 250 celebration. The society plans to assemble a committee to select items for a new capsule to be sealed next year.
