Wilmette families can bring their kids to a free bilingual music program at the Wilmette Public Library on Friday, Oct. 2, part of its Hispanic and Latine Heritage Month lineup.
The ¡Música, Música, Música! program runs from 4 to 4:45 p.m. at the library, 1242 Wilmette Ave. The library describes it as a chance for children to move, groove and learn Spanish through music. The library's Hispanic Heritage Month page, published Monday, Sept. 14, calls it a returning favorite.
Hispanic and Latine Heritage Month runs from Tuesday, Sept. 15, through Thursday, Oct. 15. The library's programming carries the theme "Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together," focused on the role of Hispanic Americans in driving progress and innovation.
Beyond the Oct. 2 event, the library has assembled a reading list of titles about Hispanic and Latinx changemakers aimed at young readers. The list includes "Just Help!: How to Build a Better World" by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, inspired by her family's desire to help others. Another pick, "Planting Stories" by Anika Denise, tells the story of Pura Belpré, New York City's first Puerto Rican librarian, who championed bilingual literature. "Wanda Hears the Stars" by Amy Hansen and Wanda Díaz Merced follows a Puerto Rican scientist who lost her sight in college and learned to study the cosmos by converting astronomical data into sound.
The library also offers a free, printable scavenger hunt families can do at home. It ties into the Heritage Month theme.
For those looking to go deeper, the library recommends a visit to the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood. The museum, at 3015 W. Division St., offers free admission. Current exhibitions include "Our Island of Treasures: Puerto Rican Voices from Indiana" and "Diasporic Collage: Puerto Rico and the Survival of a People."
A virtual author panel for the anthology "SING ME A STORY," edited by Aida Salazar, is also available on YouTube through the library's page. The panel features authors Andrea Beatriz Arango, Margarita Engle and Jasminne Mendez, moderated by Dr. Carla España.
The full list of reading recommendations and Heritage Month resources is available at the library's website. The ¡Música, Música, Música! event listing does not indicate whether advance registration is required.
