Junior midfielder Brooke Zabel bumped a loose ball into the net with her stomach two minutes after Naperville Central tied the game, lifting New Trier to a 2-1 victory and the program's eighth IHSA Class 3A girls soccer state title.
The goal came with nine minutes left in the match on June 7 at North Central College. Naperville Central's Malia Shen had just knotted the score at 1-1, swinging momentum toward the previously undefeated Redhawks (22-1-1). Zabel answered almost immediately.
The win capped a postseason run defined by composure under pressure. In the semifinal on Saturday, June 6, New Trier needed double overtime to beat Edwardsville 2-1. A week earlier, in the sectional championship on Saturday, May 30, junior Noa Boeing scored the overtime winner against Evanston after inadvertently deflecting a ball into her own net earlier in the match.
Boeing's redemption sent the Trevians to the state finals.
New Trier (27-1-1) handed Naperville Central its first loss of the season. The Redhawks, led by Michigan recruit Emerson Burke and her 40 goals, were making their first state championship appearance since 1995.
The soccer championship punctuated a dominant spring for New Trier athletics. Boys tennis won the IHSA state title on Saturday, May 30, as confirmed by New Trier Athletics. The track program produced 12 All-Staters at the IHSA championships, according to The Record North Shore.
Both Zabel and Boeing return as seniors next season.
